The Virtual Wi-Fi Router software application can turn a laptop with Wi-Fi capability into a router for other devices to connect with. It is a great little program that completely eliminates the need for a router as long as the laptop is within the program's range. It does require a little bit of configuration in order to work properly. In addition, the software sometimes loses passwords and other log in information which can be annoying at times.

However, these minor inconveniences are not much of a problem when considering the cost and hassle of setting up a router in the home or office. This is a great utility for users who do not need a permanent and dedicated Wi-Fi solution to keep their devices connected to the Internet. Connectivity is usually pretty reliable, but speeds can be slow if multiple devices are being used simultaneously.

This software may also be a bit redundant if you can already use the Wi-Fi capabilities of your smartphone or tablet to accomplish the same task. Many newer devices already include a Wi-Fi transmitter that can be activated with the press of a button. The transmitters on these devices may also be a bit faster than what is installed on a laptop as well.

This is not always the case, and users who prefer to use their laptop as a router should check out this utility. The software is free, it establishes a secure connection, and it also works with most modems that are 3G capable. I use it from time to time, and it works well enough to facilitate basic browsing when I'm getting close to reaching the data limit on my phone plan.

Nothing can ever replace the speed and functionality of a router. However, this little utility provides a nice alternative that may be beneficial for some users.
